The 27 member states of the European Union spent a combined $430.4bn on their militaries in 2025, equal to 15.7% of world military spending. That figure is our own sum of SIPRI country-level data for all 27 current EU members, not a bloc total that SIPRI itself publishes.

01 How much does the EU spend on military in 2025?

Across all 27 European Union member states, total military expenditure reached $430.4bn ($430,386m) in 2025. Every current member reported 2025 data, so the total rests on complete coverage rather than a partial sample.

The number is a spending aggregate, not the budget of a single defense actor. The European Union does not field one army or run one central military budget; the $430.4bn is what its member governments spent individually, added together. All figures on this page are expressed in SIPRI constant 2024 US dollars, which strip out inflation so totals can be compared across years.

02 How we calculate the EU total from SIPRI country data

SIPRI publishes military expenditure country by country, not by political bloc. To produce a European Union total, we take SIPRI's 2025 figure for each of the 27 current member states and add them together. Nothing is modeled, weighted, or forecast; the total is a straight sum of published country values in constant 2024 US dollars.

• Coverage — 27 of 27 current members carry a 2025 figure, so no member is missing from the sum.
• Membership basis — the set is today's EU membership, applied consistently to the 2025 year.
• Currency basis — SIPRI constant 2024 US dollars, the same base used throughout the site.

Because the total is assembled this way, we attribute it plainly: our calculation from SIPRI country-level data, not SIPRI's own published total. Any reference to 2026 or 2027 elsewhere on the site is an estimate, not an actual reported figure; the $430.4bn total here is drawn entirely from actual 2025 data.

03 The EU's 15.7% share of world military spending

The combined $430.4bn places EU members at 15.7% of total world military spending in 2025. Put differently, of every dollar spent on the world's militaries that year, close to sixteen cents were spent by an EU member state.

This share is reported here as a data fact and nothing more. It is not a statement about whether that level of spending is adequate, excessive, or comparable to any strategic need, and it does not rank the EU against other spenders as a judgment of strength. It simply locates the summed EU total within the global figure for the same year and the same constant-dollar basis.

04 EU spending vs. NATO: why the two totals differ

Readers often treat "EU" and "NATO" as interchangeable, but they are different memberships, so their spending totals cover different sets of countries.

• EU-only members — several EU states are not in NATO, yet their spending is counted in the $430.4bn EU total.
• NATO-only members — major NATO spenders, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye, are not EU members, so none of their spending appears in the EU total.
• Overlap — most EU states are also NATO members, which is why the two figures are related but never equal.

05 Which EU members drive the combined total

The $430.4bn is not spread evenly across the 27 members. In a country-by-country sum, the members with the largest economies and armed forces contribute the biggest single shares, while smaller states add proportionally less. The total is what results when each member's own 2025 spending is added at full weight, with no member excluded and no figure estimated.

That construction is what makes the headline number stable and checkable: it moves only when an individual member's reported spending moves, and it can be reproduced by anyone who sums the same 27 SIPRI country figures for 2025 in constant 2024 US dollars.
